The Center for Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders at the IRCCS Azienda Ospedaliera Metropolitana of Genova, has been dedicated to the care of patients with Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders since 1988. It has been officially recognized by the Regional Authority of Liguria as a referral center for the diagnosis and treatment of Huntington’s and other rare diseases (dystonia and atypical parkinsonism).

The Center provides five outpatient clinics dedicated to the care of patients with movement disorders. Clinical activity is predominantly outpatient-based.

The Center also provides:

• Multi-day admissions for monitoring therapeutic response to medications, including advanced infusion therapies;
• Short hospitalizations for clinical monitoring;
• Instrumental diagnostic testing and lumbar puncture;
• Clinical reassessment in cases of symptom worsening or new symptom onset;
• Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS).

Currently, approximately 2,000 patients are followed at the Center, including about 1,500 patients with Parkinson’s disease and parkinsonisms, about 300 patients receiving botulinum toxin therapy. The remaining patients affected by essential tremor, Huntington’s chorea, Wilson’s disease, and tic disorders.

The Center provides training in the field of movement disorders to medical students, residents, students of biomedical disciplines, physiotherapists and other healthcare professionals.

Research activity, developed over the years in collaboration with Italian and international centers, focuses on the study of pathophysiological mechanisms of movement disorders and the development of neurorehabilitation protocols.
