More than 2000 patients with movement disorders are treated annually in the in- and out-patient services of the Department of Neurology of the University Hospital Würzburg.
Our laboratories use a wide range of clinical and experimental techniques offering a broad range of scientific expertise including biomarker research, animal studies dedicated to the role of inflammation in neurodegenerative disorders and a clinical research unit with expertise in all phases of drug or device development. Diverse studies aim at improving the therapeutic potentials in the treatment of movement disorders and allow a careful management of individual patients. These involve molecular brain imaging studies with simultaneous deep brain and cortical recordings and biomechanical measurements. We aim at a better understanding of the neuronal encoding mechanisms of motor control towards new and personalized treatments. In particular, we helped to establish deep brain stimulation as one of the most potent therapies for patients with movement disorders.
