The Centre for Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders of the Pisa University Hospital has been active since 1984 and was recognised by the Tuscany Region as a Regional Reference Centre for Parkinson’s Disease in 1997.

The Center’s work is dedicated to the diagnosis and management of patients with Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders, through a multidisciplinary approach involving neurologists, psychologists, and other specialists.

The Center currently serves approximately 1,800 patients, with approximately 240 outpatient visits per month. This care is supplemented by admissions to the Neurology department for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.

The Center is organized into outpatient clinics dedicated to the main pathologies and conditions related to movement disorders, including Parkinson’s disease and atypical parkinsonisms (multiple system atrophy – MSA, progressive supranuclear palsy – PSP, dementia with Lewy bodies – LBD), normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), dystonias and hyperkinetic syndromes, as well as specific clinics for the management of advanced therapies and a general clinic for movement disorders.

The Center has consolidated experience in the management of advanced therapies, including Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) and infusion therapies.

The Center coordinates multidisciplinary diagnostic and therapeutic pathways through a network of specialist collaborations within the Company.

The Center is part of European networks dedicated to multiple system atrophy and Huntington’s disease and collaborates with numerous national and international institutions. Clinical research focuses on the development of new therapeutic approaches and advanced diagnostic methods, particularly in imaging techniques. Since 1986, approximately 50 clinical trials have been conducted.
