Movement disorders are heterogeneous diseases associated with motor and non-motor symptoms. In the last decade, it has become clear that an aspect common to all these disorders is the presence of abnormal neuroplasticity, an alteration that involves brain activities at all levels and is reflected by both motor and non-motor dysfunctions. Furthermore, pharmacological and surgical therapies geared to treat mostly the motor symptoms are often disappointing, may complicate the picture and may induce maladaptive plasticity.
Growing evidence supports the efficacy of neurorehabilitation for the treatment of movement disorders. It is likely that tailored training involving both goal-based practice and aerobic exercise harnesses neuroplasticity-related mechanisms thus achieving a general improvement of functions.

Therefore, we propose a cycle of monthly webinars, “PILLS on PD Rehabilitation”. This series is an overview of best rehabilitation practices in Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders: suggestions on specific, tailored strategies will be presented for the management of patients with movement disorders.

The objective of this webinar series is to advance and disseminate the knowledge about rehabilitation in movement disorders for medical and related disciplined professionals. Professionals at all career stages will present state of the art practices and on-going research on rehabilitation in movement disorders.

These webinars of the Fresco Institute are a resource for multidisciplinary team of professionals to implement tailored, integrated and comprehensive models of care for people living with Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders.
