PROGRAM GOALS

This program focuses on the training of practicing art therapists to master the theories and practice of art therapy techniques for clients with movement disorders and other neurodegenerative diseases.

The program aims to offer: 

Comprehensive scientific background on pathophysiology, clinical phenomenology, functional needs and current standards of care in the field of Parkinson’s Disease and related conditions. 

Ability to identify population-specific symptoms and challenges experienced by clients suffering from common neurodegenerative disease, including motor disability, behavioral abnormalities, cognitive changes, psychiatric comorbidities and effects of medications. 

General understanding of the main diagnostic and therapeutic challenges encountered by health professionals while interacting with these clinical populations. 

Specific knowledge and techniques in art therapy practices working with these particular populations. 

Skills in identifying and assessing psycho-physiological conditions manifested in the art making processes and the products created by these populations. 

Confidence to approach clients struggling with a chronic progressive neurodegenerative conditions, and to deliver individualized, comprehensive art therapy treatment. 

 

PROGRAM STRUCTURE 

The training program consists of webinar lectures held over four weeks, totaling 30 hours of theoretical learning, followed by 32 hours of practicum training during the period of Monday, July 27 through Saturday, August 1, 2020. The practicum training will offer direct engagement with clients under the supervision of specialized art therapists and expert neurologists at the Villa Margherita Fresco Parkinson Center in the town of Vicenza, Italy (located approximately 25 miles from the city of Venice). A final social event will celebrate the end of the training program in Venice. 

An International Certificate of Competence will be issued by the NYU Graduate Art Therapy Program Fresco Parkinson Institute Faculty Board upon the successful completion of the training program.
